Uh … [ caroline knows the voice, even if she's a little slow on bringing a face to it. she remembers emma in a fuzzy memory where she'd been battling her mirror for dominance over her own body. a great impression she'd left on the woman she'd mistaken as elena gilbert. but her words come out a little slurred, even if she tries to compose herself as a sober girl who has sort of propositioned a woman who may dislike her. ] … Yeah. I'm — [ sorry? ] A little not okay. I thought your name was Elena on my device thing ...
[ if she isn't embarrassed enough as it is, she finds her entire face heating to the point where she wonders why flames aren't licking at her skin. she's so used to people hanging up on her, on damon telling her to get over it, barbie, your tears aren't worth it. the singing makes everything so cheesy, but caroline kind of wishes she could keep this as a reminder that there's a little hope, even when one is being hopeless. and people believe in it. ]
Thanks. [ she's glad emma can't see her face. she's pretty sure she's sniffling — or the dust in the bar is going to make her sneeze, but she very much doubts it's the latter, since, you know, she's pretty sure that's a tear rolling from the corner of her eye, or perhaps it's just raining indoors. ]
You're not s'bad at singing. [ she laughs, it sounds wet. ] You should join me for a duet sometime! Hakuna matata!
[She decides not to comment on just how teary that laughter sounds -- she can't speak for anyone else, but she knows she hates it when anyone calls attention to the fact that she's upset, like she can't tell for herself that it's showing. She'll let Caroline hold onto her dignity.]
A duet? I don't know, you don't want me to--
[She sighs, letting out a soft, mirthless chuckle.]
Although I guess if it's going to happen, it won't really be in our control, will it? Wonderland seems to have its own ideas about what we need.
You can totally hang up on me if it helps. [ she laughs. as someone who had once serenaded her … matt wasn't her boyfriend at the time, was he? but she had freely serenaded him, jumping into that stage with all the fears on her shoulders — she finds wonderland to be no different, even though she finds some of the song choices to be a little embarrassing. ]
Hakuna Matata … [ emma can't see caroline trying to stifle her (not so wet) laughter by biting her bottom lip briefly. ] Ain't no passing craze!

[It takes effort, but Emma manages to cut herself off. At least she does so with a laugh -- and she feels it's worth noticing that Caroline's spirits seem to have lifted slightly as well.]
I don't know about hanging up on you. I mean, you picked up the phone because you needed to talk, right? You were feeling alone?

Hey... you okay?
[Because wow, that song was inappropriate for the two of them.]
Caroline?

Whoops.
LMFAO
[How can she just hang up on that?]
You need to talk about it?
[Or sing about it, as the case may be. Sounds to her like Caroline could use a little cheering up. Maybe a fresh perspective-- oh God. Here it comes.]
Here's a story of a girl
Who grew up lost and lonely,
Thinking love was fairy tales
And trouble was made only for me.
Even in the darkness,
Every color can be found,
And every day of rain brings water flowing
To things growing in the ground--
[She cuts herself off, grimacing to herself as she switches herself back to regular speech.]
So keep your head up, Caroline.

[She pauses.]
So... hakuna matata? What a... wonderful phrase.
[She hates her life so much right now.]

[She knows a little something about that.]
